Below are some of the most common problems our practice routinely treats.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is one of the most common dental problems facing kids, teens, and adults. Foods and snacks high in sugar and carbohydrates leave deposits on your teeth that bond with the bacteria in your mouth to form plaque. When plaque is not removed, tooth decay can develop as the plaque eats away at the protective enamel on teeth. While tooth decay is very common, it is highly preventable. By limiting how many foods you eat that contain high amounts of sugar and carbohydrates, you can dramatically reduce your risk for decay.

Tooth Sensitivity

When you have sensitive teeth, certain actions like brushing your teeth or consuming hot or cold foods and drinks can cause sharp, temporary pain in your teeth. Sensitive teeth can be caused by worn down enamel, receding gums or by chips or cracks on the surfaces of teeth. Tooth sensitivity can also be felt after having your teeth whitened.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal or gum disease is a common yet highly preventable problem. Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease that is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. If it is not treated, gingivitis leads to periodontitis, which can eventually lead to tooth loss. Signs that could indicate that you have periodontal disease are consistently foul-smelling breath or an unpleasant taste in your mouth that never goes away. You can avoid getting periodontal disease by doing a great job of brushing and flossing and visiting us for routine checkups and cleanings

Bad Breath (Halitosis)

Halitosis or bad breath is often caused by the buildup of food particles and bacteria in the mouth. When small pieces of food are not removed by brushing and flossing, they break down to cause the breath to smell unpleasant. While consuming some foods like garlic and onions can cause your breath to temporarily smell bad, consistently bad breath may indicate that you have tooth decay or gum disease.

Canker Sores

Canker sores or aphthous ulcers are small, shallow lesions on the inside of the mouth that often recur. A canker sore has a light grayish-colored center with a red-colored border. Most often, a canker sore will disappear on its own after a week or two. If you have recurring canker sores, Dr. Hanna can recommend an antimicrobial mouth rinse or a topical ointment.

Orthodontic Problems

An improper bite or a malocclusion as it’s also called can be something you inherit or acquire. Orthodontic problems can be caused by many things like missing or crowded teeth, a misaligned jaw, a long-term thumb sucking habit, developmental issues and even accidents and injuries.
