The treatments we provide are essential to a healthy smile, but patient education is important too. We want our patients to not only know what we’re doing, but the reason behind it. Therefore, we’ve put together a few of the most common questions we’re asked, along with the answers.

How often should I see my dentist in Kalamazoo?

Our practice agrees with the recommendation provided by the American Dental Association (ADA) which states that everyone should visit their dentist twice a year for routine checkups and professional cleanings.

What should I do if I have some type of a dental emergency?

We ask that you call our office if you have a dental emergency. If your emergency occurs during regular office hours, we’ll work you into our schedule. After hours, on weekends and during the holidays, you can call our office for the doctor’s emergency contact number.

Do you recommend any particular type of toothbrush?

We recommend that our adult patients use a small-to-medium size toothbrush that has soft-to-medium bristles. The head of the brush should be small enough to easily brush all areas of the mouth thoroughly, including the back teeth which are more difficult to reach. Children should use small toothbrushes with soft bristles. People with sensitive teeth can benefit from using soft-bristled toothbrushes that are gentle on the teeth.

How often should I replace my toothbrush?

Adults should replace their toothbrushes every 3 to 4 months as the bristles will wear down or after being sick. Typically, children’s toothbrushes need to be replaced more often than adult toothbrushes with the deciding factor being the bristles. As soon as the bristles begin to look frayed, it’s time to replace the brush.

Does your Kalamazoo dentist consider a powered toothbrush to be more effective than a manual toothbrush?

No, as both types of toothbrushes are equally effective at cleaning the teeth. Children may find brushing with a powered toothbrush more exciting. If you have difficulty using a manual toothbrush, a powered toothbrush may be more comfortable and easier to use.

What should I do first, brush or floss?

It doesn’t matter if you brush or floss first, as long as you do a good job at both. However, when you floss before brushing, the fluoride in your toothpaste is better able to reach into the areas between your teeth.

Do you consider one type of toothpaste better than others?

No. However, we do recommend using a toothpaste that contains fluoride and which carries the ADA Seal of Acceptance. This seal ensures that the brush has been assessed for safety and effectiveness. It’s important to use a fluoride toothpaste as fluoride works to strengthen and rebuild tooth structure to help you avoid dental decay.

Are payment plans available to help me pay for the dental treatment I need?

Yes. We accept most major credit cards and many types of dental insurance. We also offer payment options through CareCredit financing, which helps you pay for the dental care you need.
